In normal dungeons, rare monsters have approximately a 25% drop rate based on player experience. The rate may be slightly higher for harder difficulty tiers. For end game bosses, the estimated drop chance per difficulty is: Mythical 100%, Legend 100% ( 40% If a Mythical Dungeon is available ), Master ~40%, Expert ~5%, Adept ~2%.

I should have assumed that, but most of the time "1 time use" abilities take precedence. Beyond that screwup, this was a cakewalk with this team: Revo minerva gadius f/l tsubaki phoenix knight saria ilm I lucked out on the lucifer floor and he gave me >3 fire and light each time. Since I planned on spending a stone on that floor and didn't, I didn't feel bad spending a stone for my screwup on volsung.
